How to play:
- Must be traveling in an area populated by tourists of all kinds. (Note: This game does not work well in areas like Belfast where there is not a dense tourist population.)
- This game can be played at anytime.
- It works well to be observing from the vantage point of a cafe, restaurant, or whilst waiting for a bus.
- Minimum amount of players: 1; maximum amount of players: infinity.
Objective:
- To find an American tourist based on the criteria of the game which is outlined below
How to actually Spot the American(s):
- 1. Usually you will find a group of Americans together in a pack.
- Examples:
- School groups
- Families
- Tours
- Couples
- 2. Once you think you have found the your subject, you must observe the subject:
- First, examine the subject's shoes.
- White sneakers, basketball shoes? --> American
- Sandals appearing to be from Old Navy (flip flops for $2.50)? --> American
- Sandals with socks? --> probably German, or maybe an American male
- Boots higher than the ankle on a female? --> could be American, hard to tell
- Second, examine the subject's pants (Note: Americans usually wear jeans).
- Dress trousers (especially if you hear them use the word "trouser")? --> not American
- Jeans? --> could be American, hard to tell, keep looking
- Light colored jeans, or parts of the jean are white-washed? --> probably American
- Flare at the bottom of the pant leg? --> American
- Slightly worn and frayed at the bottom of the pant leg? --> American
- Dark jeans, fitted properly, no flare, no shown signs of wear at the bottom of the pant leg? --> probably not American
- Sweat pants with a logo (either on the front or back of the pants)? --> probably an American teenager
- Cargo shorts, paired with sneakers (and high socks)? --> American
- Yoga pants? --> American
- Mom jeans? --> American
- Finally, if you'd like to keep going... Next, examine the subject's upper body.
- "I love (insert: city)" t-shirt or sweatshirt? --> American
- T-shirt, sweatshirt, or jacket with an American sports team logo? --> American
- Any sort of graphic t-shirt? --> probably American
- Football (soccer) jersey? --> probably not American
- North Face or Columbia Jacket? --> American
- Wearing a backpack? --> maybe an American
- Map, guidebook, water bottle, and some food in their hands with a dazed and confused look on their face? --> American
- Slightly obnoxious? --> probably American
- Wearing sunglasses and a visor or baseball cap? --> American
Now, it's time for you to play! See if you can spot the clear indicators that these people are American tourists!
